Information
for Prospective Graduate Students
If you are
interested in joining the research group of Prof. Haile, please note the
following:
- Apply
to an appropriate option (Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry etc.)
before contacting me directly
- As Caltech presents no barriers to students finding an advisor in any field (irrespective of the option that admits them), you should apply to the option that most suits you in terms of coursework and how you wish to present yourself to the world
- I typically accept 2-3 students into my group each year
- I am
unable to assess your chances of admission before the faculty of the
option to which you have applied, as a whole, examines the qualifications of all our applicants; if you ask me to provide you with such an assessment prior to that, it will be an indication to me that you have not read this page, and I will be much less willing to accept you into my group
- Strong
letters of recommendation are essential for admission
- A strong
record of laboratory experience aids your chances of admission
- Typical
GRE and TOEFL scores for Caltech are as follows - these are by no means
"cut-off" values, nor does obtaining such scores guarrantee
admittance, as we look at your entire record

application, clearly state your research interests and what you would
like to do in the field of solid state ionics or electroceramics
I look forward
to reviewing your application!
